I love hiding appliances. Kitchens in open floor plans shared with living spaces work best when appliances are out of sight and the room feels more furniture-like. The exception is a great range, which acts like the “hearth” of the room. In our Salt Marsh kitchen renovation, I quieted the range hood with white plaster that visually recedes. The pair of refrigerator / freezers are concealed behind armoire-style furniture panels flanking holly & teak boat-decking counters. The paneled dishwasher is on the sink side of the island, and the microwave is inside a cabinet. Clean lines leave the attention on more important priorities, like people and beautiful views. That's my idea of good interior design. :)
